Bonaire
Before going to Bonaire, I expected beautiful beaches and good weather, but I didn’t really expect how relaxed everything would feel there. From the moment we arrived, the whole atmosphere on the island felt slower in the best way possible. No stress, no rushing from place to place — just enjoying where you are.
What I loved most about Bonaire was that some of the best moments were completely unplanned. We would randomly stop somewhere for food after driving around the island all day and end up staying there for hours. Most places weren’t overly fancy, but that honestly made them even better. Good music, warm evenings, fresh food, and the ocean nearby somehow made every dinner feel special.
Food on the Island
The food in Bonaire felt simple, fresh, and full of flavor. A lot of dishes were based around fresh fish, grilled meat, rice, tropical fruit, and spicy sauces. Nothing felt too heavy or overcomplicated, which really fits the whole island atmosphere.
One thing I noticed is that food there is much more about enjoying the moment than trying to make everything look perfect. Sitting outside with good food after a warm day just hits differently there.
One of My Favorite Spots: La Cantina
One of my favorite places we visited on Bonaire was definitely La Cantina. The whole restaurant had this beautiful garden atmosphere with lights everywhere, lots of greenery, and such a relaxed vibe. It honestly felt like one of those places where you instantly feel comfortable the moment you walk in.
We ended up spending way longer there than we originally planned, just enjoying the atmosphere, drinks, and food. And the biggest highlight for me was definitely the steak. It was honestly one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time, perfectly cooked, full of flavor, and exactly how a good steak should be.
As a sous chef, I really appreciate places that keep things simple but do everything properly, and that’s exactly what La Cantina felt like to me. Good ingredients, a relaxed setting, and an atmosphere that makes you want to stay the entire evening. It ended up being one of those dinners I kept thinking about afterwards.

Cocktails at Rum Runners
Another place that really stood out to me was Rum Runners. The location alone already makes it special because it’s directly by the water, so while sitting there you’re basically surrounded by the ocean the entire time. When we went, the sea was incredibly rough, and you could actually see the waves crashing hard against the walls next to the restaurant. It gave the whole evening such a cool atmosphere that honestly made the place unforgettable.
But besides the view, the cocktails there were probably the biggest surprise. Their cocktail menu honestly felt endless, with so many different and unique combinations. I ended up ordering one with white chocolate pieces and cinnamon, which sounded a little strange at first, but it was surprisingly good.
What also surprised me was that almost all of the cocktails were under 10 dollars, especially for a place in such a beautiful location. We ended up staying there way longer than planned, just watching the ocean, trying different drinks, and enjoying the atmosphere. It’s definitely one of those places I would go back to immediately.

What I’m Taking Home as a Sous Chef
Being on Bonaire reminded me again that simple food can sometimes be the most memorable. As a sous chef, you often focus on techniques, presentation, and details, but this trip reminded me how important atmosphere and good ingredients really are.
Some of the dishes I enjoyed most on the island were actually very simple. Fresh fish, properly seasoned rice, grilled vegetables, homemade sauces, that was enough. It made me realize that food doesn’t always need to be complicated to leave an impression on someone.
I also really liked how relaxed dining felt there. People take their time, stay longer at the table, order another drink, and actually enjoy the evening instead of rushing through dinner. That’s probably one of the biggest things I’ll remember from Bonaire.
